3 Things To Know About A Sigmoidoscopy
Finding out that you have to have any type of procedure or testing done can be stressful for a lot of patients. Here at Vanguard Gastroenterology, we have found that the more informed our patients are, the less stress they feel. If it is recommended that you get a sigmoidoscopy, you may not even know where to begin as far as the basics: What is it? What is preparation like? And what will it feel like afterward? Let’s take a closer look at three basic things to know about a sigmoidoscopy.
What Is It?
You’ve more than likely heard about a colonoscopy, but you’ve less than likely heard about a sigmoidoscopy. Similar to a colonoscopy, a sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that allows us to examine the lining of your rectum and a portion of the colon. By using a thin, flexible tube that is inserted into the anus, we will be able to get a better look at the health of your rectum and colon, take biopsies, and check for abnormalities like precancerous polyps, adenomas, or large polyps.
What Is Preparation Like?
Before you get a sigmoidoscopy, we will send you home with detailed instructions regarding how to properly prepare. Just like with a colonoscopy, the quality of the procedure depends on the quality of the preparation; so make sure that you follow every instruction exactly as we recommend. If you have any questions about how to prepare, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovery for most patients is very easy. On average, most patients experience a little bit of gas afterward which may be painful, but it should subside. If you have pain that gets worse, contact our office right away.
By understanding the basics of a sigmoidoscopy, we hope that you will feel more calm about this procedure. To learn more or to schedule your exam, contact us online or at our Tribeca office today at Call us.
