Colon cancer has some non-modifiable risk factors like age, race, personal and family history which you can do nothing about. But many of the things that increase our risk for colon cancer are modifiable like being a smoker, low activity levels, heavy alcohol intake, obesity, and high fat and low fiber diets. Many modifiable risk factors go hand in hand. For example, if you eat poorly you are more likely to be overweight.
In America the average person eats a high fat/low fiber diet. The conveniences of drive thru restaurants and ready made meals combined with the hassle of cooking in the evening following a hectic work day make it easy to slip into a life long trend of eating poorly. Research shows that continually eating a diet high in fat over a number of years may increase your risk of colon cancer, especially when your diet is heavy in red and processed meats. Eating a healthy, well rounded diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables adds healthy fiber into your diet and decreases the number of processed meals you consume. Don’t feel like you need to give up red meat all together, but eat it in moderation and stick to chicken and fish on a regular basis.
Decreasing your modifiable risk factors helps to lower your risk of colon cancer, but it also helps you to be healthier and may help change or control other chronic health problems. Stop smoking. Get out and exercise a few times a week. Not only will adding exercise help you to lose weight and decrease your risk of cancer, but you will feel better and have more energy.
