GI Issues And Aging – Gut Health
Today we start a series on aging and the GI issues you need to keep in mind.
Aging gracefully is something we all hope to do. But that is much easier said than done, right? It can be easy to feel like the wheels are coming off when it comes to health and aging. Our bodies change so much as age which can lend to worsening gastrointestinal issues.
There are many factors that can lead to worsening GI issues related to aging. Other medical conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure, can cause GI problems. Medications for other chronic conditions can cause constipation, diarrhea and even bleeding. Decreased activity levels, slower metabolisms and weight gain all play a part in a more sluggish GI tract leading to constipation.
As you age it is important to pay attention to your gut health and listen to your body. Talk with your doctor about chronic conditions, medications including over the counter medications and vitamins that you take and what symptoms you are experiencing. You may be very surprised to see how many things can overlap and cause seemingly unrelated symptoms.
There are many things you can do to help improve your colon health:
- Hydrate! It is so important to drink water to try and avoid constipation and other GI issues.
- Eating a high fiber diet with raw fruits and vegetables, avoiding greasy, spicy and high fat foods when possible.
- Get up and get moving! Activity will help to regulate your colon health and improve overall symptoms. Talk to your doctor about whether or not a probiotic is right for you.
