3 Ways to Manage Your IBS
- Posted on: May 30 2018
It’s one thing to deal with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and it’s another thing entirely to manage it. If you have recently been diagnosed with IBS or if you’ve been living with it for more years than you can count, then you know just how painful, irritating, and life-altering flare-ups can be. Luckily, by finding ways to manage your flare-ups and make them fewer and far between, you can hopefully live a more comfortable life. Let’s take a closer look at a few tips.
Eat More Fiber
When it comes to IBS, fiber is basically your best friend. If you don’t already eat a diet rich in fiber, make sure that you are taking a daily fiber supplement. Fiber helps to remove excess water from your digestive system which can contribute to things like diarrhea. Healthy sources of fiber include whole-grain bread and cereals, fruit, vegetables, and beans.
Drink More Water
Drinking more water is good for basically every part of your body— including your stomach and gut. Not only will drinking enough water ensure that you stay hydrated, but it can also help soothe your stomach during an IBS episode. As a tip, try carrying around a water bottle with you everywhere throughout the day— it will act as a constant reminder to stay hydrated.
Watch the Caffeine
Yes, a cup (or two or three) of coffee a day may be a real lifesaver, but caffeine can also contribute to IBS symptoms like bloating and diarrhea. Try cutting back on your caffeine intake or switch to something that is more soothing on your stomach like green tea.
Irritable bowel system can make more than your bowels feel irritable. Not only can symptoms strike at any time, but they can often be embarrassing. Luckily, by using these three small tips listed above, you can help to better manage your IBS symptoms. Want to learn more about IBS and IBS treatments?
