Colon Cancer Awareness

Colon Cancer | Concorde Gastroenterology | New York, NYPotty talk isn’t exactly something you want to bring to the kitchen table, but sometimes, it is necessary. With colon cancer awareness month around the corner, we think that now is better than ever to delve into some colon cancer statistics, the importance of cancer screenings, and even some signs of colon cancer.

Colon Cancer Statistics

Let’s talk statistics. According to the National Cancer Institute, over 135,000 people were diagnosed with colon cancer last year. And although only 8% of all new cases of cancer were from colon cancer, that’s still a significant amount.

Additionally, the National Cancer Institute also reports that a little over 4% of men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer at some point during their lifetime. So, what does that mean for you? It’s time to get a colonoscopy.

Colon Cancer Screenings

The National Cancer Institute recommends that patients over the age of 50 get a colonoscopy to check for colorectal cancer. However, if you experience any of the following signs and symptoms, we encourage you to get a colonoscopy sooner or more frequently:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Anemia
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Unexplained Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • A change in bowel habits

The Importance of Cancer Screenings

Just like with all forms of cancer, the earlier we detect colorectal cancer, the easier it will be to treat. And although it is estimated that around 65% of colorectal cancer patients live beyond five years, that number is still fairly low compared to other forms of cancer. Luckily, with early detection with a colonoscopy from Concorde Gastroenterology, we can help you get on a faster path toward recovery.

If you are either over the age of fifty or if you have experienced any of the symptoms listed in this article, schedule your colonoscopy at one of our locations today. To learn more, call us at 212-889-5544.
