How to Prepare for An EUS

Endoscopic Ultrasonography New York, NYIf you suffer from chronic stomach or chest pain, then our gastroenterologists here at Concorde Gastroenterology may suggest that you get a test called an Endoscopic Ultrasonography or an EUS. One of the unique things about an EUS is that it can be used on all parts of the digestive tract and surrounding organs including the small intestine, stomach, esophagus, duodenum, the upper and lower portion of the digestive tract, pancreas, gallbladder, lungs, and liver which can sometimes make it easier for us to offer you a reliable diagnosis. Just like any gastro procedure, though, preparation is key. Let’s take a closer look at how you can prepare for this procedure.

Initial Appointment

During your initial consultation, make sure to discuss all of your over-the-counter and prescription medications with your Concorde Gastro physician. Additionally, make sure to discuss any allergies you have and explain your medical history.

Preparation

Depending on the type of EUS that you are having, we may encourage you to fast so that your gastrointestinal tract is completely empty. For an upper and lower EUS all patients should fast so that everything is empty. If you are having a lower ultrasound, we will have you take a laxative in addition to fasting. If you have to have a biopsy, we may recommend that you stop taking blood thinners prior to the procedure, but we will discuss this during your initial consultation appointment.

If you have any questions about how to prepare for your EUS at any point, don’t’ hesitate to reach out to our office and give us a call. To learn more about getting an EUS or about your gastro health, schedule an appointment at our Midtown office and contact us at 212-889-5544.
