Natural Home Remedies that Help Stop Bloating

Are you tired of having to suffer from stomach bloat? Stomach bloat is no laughing matter, and it’s probably safe to say that no one likes to have that sluggish, uncomfortable feeling all day that goes along with being bloated. All of us at some point or another has suffered from stomach bloat. Stomach bloating is so common, who hasn’t suffered a bout of bloating? Bloat can strike in many different ways; a female could be menstruating, you overindulged on food, or you have some sort of food intolerance that you may or may not be aware of.

Do you often suffer from a bloated stomach and would like relief from its discomfort? If so, here are some natural ways to bring relief and help stop stomach bloating:

Drink Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea or any other mint-flavored products is not recommended if you suffer from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or have acid reflux. However, if you don’t suffer from these conditions, mint tea might very well become your savior. Peppermint tea contains menthol oil, which can help relieve muscle spasms. This relaxing effect is what will help you get rid of that bloated feeling by allowing you to release any pent up gas that you might be storing up!

Don’t Skip Meals

While it might be tempting, especially in the morning, do not skip any meals throughout the day. Instead of eating a few big meals, try eating something small every 2-3 hours. By eating often and having smaller potions you will not get full too quickly, and this will help prevent having your energy lowered. When you eat a large meal, it can burden your digestive system by making it digest too much at one time, and this is what can cause you to feel bloated and sluggish.

Watch What You Eat

Take a step back and look at the diet you typically eat. Do you eat out a lot, eat fast food, or go for boxed, processed foods often? If so, you might want to make some simple food swaps, as this could make a tremendous difference in how you feel every day.  Make sure you are making the healthier choices by adding more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, and by choosing items that aren’t already pre-cooked. Making a meal from scratch does take longer, but you will ditch a good chunk of the preservatives that are typically found in pre-made food. Your stomach will thank you for it, and in return it might help solve your digestive woes.

Limit Stress

Due to the brain-gut connection, it is not uncommon for your gut to go “haywire” when you are going through mental turbulence.  The GI tract features the same type of neurotransmitters and neurons as your brain, and it also communicates with the central nervous system. This is why you often have a reaction in your stomach when there are fluctuations with your emotions, such as having “butterflies” when in love, and nausea when you are anxious. Due to this, finding ways to lower or limit your stress is imperative. If you need some inspiration, check out our previous article on which yoga poses are beneficial for digestion.

Add More Fiber into Diet

If you are constipated often and feel like this might be the reason why you are often bloated, then you should slowly introduce more fiber into your diet. You can find good sources of fiber in foods such as cereal, bread, psyllium husk, strawberries, bananas, carrots, broccoli, oranges, and beetroot. Get a Massage

This is a less thought-of method, but it does work for many. Massages feel amazing on tired, sore and overworked muscles so the next time you are feeling bloated consider trying out an abdominal massage. Acupuncturists Mary Beth Ladenheim and Brian Huwe suggest starting out with this simple self-massage routine: start off by lying down comfortably on your back and be sure to breathe slow and deep. Then place one hand (left hand for men, right hand for women) above your belly button and your other hand on top of your first hand. Move both hands in unison with each other in a circle around your navel. Do this motion 100 times, and then reverse the direction and repeat for 100 more times.
