Understanding A Little More About What It Can Mean to Be Gluten-Free

Celiac Disease | Concorde Gastroenterology | New York, NYIt can seem like that everywhere you go to eat, there is now a gluten-free option for you to choose from. Want french toast for brunch? There’s a gluten-free option. Want a brownie for dessert? Why not go for the gluten free one? And even though you know that there are gluten-free options around just about every corner, going gluten-free is more than just a diet decision for people with Celiac disease; it’s a must.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is a malabsorption disease that damages your body’s small intestine. This, in turn, makes it hard for your body to properly absorb nutrients. Normally, your small intestine allows your body to absorb nutrients from food into the bloodstream. In individuals who have Celiac disease, when they eat food containing gluten, their body responds by destroying the villi— tiny protrusions in the small intestine which help your body absorb the nutrients. Without villi, your body becomes malnourished— no matter how much food you eat.

What is Treatment Like?

There is no cure yet for Celiac disease. However, it can be treated under the supervision of a doctor and with a gluten-free diet. Even though some people believe that a gluten-free diet is healthier— even if they don’t have Celiac disease— it can be dangerous because it often entails the restriction of other key nutrients. Here at Concorde Gastroenterology, we sill supervise your diet and provide you with any additional supplementation needed.

If you or a loved one has Celiac disease, you know just how painful it can be. Luckily, by going on a supervised gluten-free diet, you can hopefully find some relief and get back to living a normal life.
