What’s FibroScan and What You Need to Know

Fibroscan Manhattan, NYOne of the earliest ways that we detect liver disease is through a simple blood test. If we notice that your liver enzymes are elevated, then that’s reason to be concerned. Usually, we will follow up with another blood test or two to see if they have come down, because sometimes your liver enzymes become elevated if you have been sick or fighting something off. If, however, they still remain high then we may recommend that you get either a liver biopsy or a procedure called FibroScan. So, what is a FibroScan?

What’s a FibroScan?

As previously mentioned, if your liver enzymes are continually elevated, then the next step is usually to do a liver biopsy or a test like a Fibroscan to check for liver disease. FibroScan works by using ultrasound waves to measure liver scarring in patients with chronic liver disease. The ultrasonic waves pass through the liver and then back up to the ultrasound probe. The wave speed helps to detect the stiffness of the liver to determine how severe your liver disease is.

Why Not Get a Biopsy?

Fibroscan can be used instead of a biopsy— especially for patients who have already undergone at least one liver biopsy. A lot of patients choose FibroScan over a biopsy because it doesn’t involve pain, complications, or a needle. Plus, the results are immediate and show the evolution of your liver which can help us identify any trends.

Is FibroScan Effective?

Studies have shown that tens of thousands of liver disease patients have proven that FibroScan is a very accurate and useful way of determining just how hard your liver is.

As you can see, FibroScan is sometimes the better choice when it comes to detecting liver disease and how advanced it is. To learn more about liver disease and how FibroScan can help, contact our Tribeca office and call us at 212-889-5544.
