Normally, your small intestine allows your body to absorb nutrients from food into the bloodstream. In individuals who have Celiac disease, when they eat food containing gluten, their body responds by destroying the villi— tiny protrusions in the small intestine which help your body absorb the nutrients. Without villi, your body becomes malnourished— no matter how much food you eat.
What Is Treatment Like?
There is no cure yet for Celiac disease. However, it can be treated under the supervision of a doctor and with a gluten-free diet. Even though some people believe that a gluten-free diet is healthier— even if they don’t have Celiac disease— it can be dangerous because it often entails the restriction of other key nutrients.
