When Seasonal Allergies Take A Turn For The Worse
Most people get excited when the seasons change, spring arrives, weather becomes more pleasant, and they can spend more time outside. However, there is a growing group of people who might not rejoice at the change of season due to a condition called eosinophilic esophagitis. This condition of the gastrointestinal tract has very similar symptoms to a more commonly known condition, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but has a different root cause and course of treatment.
What Exactly Is Eosinophilic Esophagitis?
Eosinophilic Esophagitis, or EoE, is actually an allergic disorder that irritates the lining of the esophagus. It is believed that the increase in spring pollen counts can be a trigger for EoE. Although the root cause of the disease isn’t fully understood, research indicates that it can be due to both genetics and environmental exposure. It can impact both children and adults and it tends to present with symptoms that include the following: difficulty swallowing, chest and abdominal pain, heartburn, food impaction (when food gets stuck in the esophagus), vomiting or regurgitation, and failure to thrive in children. While eosinophils are normal white blood cells that appear in the digestive tract, those who are affected by EoE have an abundance of the cells in their esophagus. The cells produce a protein that causes inflammation and scarring, which causes difficulty swallowing and leads to the above-described symptoms.
What Can I Do About My EoE?
The first step to understanding your EoE is having a proper diagnosis. The disease is properly diagnosed through an endoscopy and a biopsy, where one of our doctors at Vanguard Gastro will look for the presence of EoE. Depending on your specific case, we may run additional tests to determine how to properly treat the condition. Since the condition is a chronic one, most patients will thrive on certain dietary changes and restrictions as well as medications if necessary. Don’t suffer any longer. If you find yourself living day to day with the discomfort that comes along with EoE, find a convenient Vanguard Gastro location today for an evaluation.
