Hemorrhoids form in or around the anus and are caused by swollen blood vessels. They can be very uncomfortable and are fairly common in adults. They can be treated at home in many cases. But, in certain cases, hemorrhoids require medical attention. Hemorrhoid banding, or rubber band ligation, is a procedure that is sometimes done when home treatments don’t work. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a rubber band to stop the flow of blood to hemorrhoids.
Rubber band ligation is the procedure a tight rubber band placed at the base of the hemorrhoid, which cuts off the blood flow. This treatment is only used for internal hemorrhoids.
Treatment affect can occur anywhere from one to two weeks after banding. Treatments are often done at 2 week intervals.
After the procedure, your doctor will advise you about what to expect and what you can and cannot do. You should avoid any kind of strenuous work for 24-48 hours afterward although most patients are able to resume daily activities and return to work on the same day of the procedure. You will want to refrain from straining while defecating, as it can lead to more hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoid banding is typically an in office procedure.
The procedure is done by a doctor via a small tool called a ligator. Then, using the device, a rubber band or two is fastened around the base of the hemorrhoid.
Hemorrhoid banding is typically completed in a few minutes.
You may feel pressure for a few days and some urgency to defecate. Most patients are able to resume daily activities and return to work on the same day of the procedure. You may also have some bleeding for the first few days. If it lasts for more than three days, you should contact your doctor.
If you have certain health conditions, hemorrhoid banding is not recommended. If you have the following, it is best to avoid hemorrhoid banding.
– Bleeding disorder
– Rectal cancer
– Pregnancy
– Inflammatory bowel disease
– Acute thrombosis
– Significant protruding rectum
– Suppressed immunity
– Perirectal abscess
Hemorrhoid banding should be avoided by people who take anticoagulant medications.
